Tokyo – Japan dominated the World Street Skateboarding Championships with Yuto Horigome claiming the men’s title while Aori Nishimura clinched the women’s crown in Rome, Italy.
The championships also served as Olympic qualifiers, with the podium finishers punching their tickets for the showcase starting in Tokyo next month.
Japan’s Horigome upset pre-tournament favourite four-time world champion Nyjah Huston of the United States to take the podium’s top step. The 22-year-old Horigome received 36.75 points to add the global title to his 2019 X Games gold medal. Compatriot Sora Shirai shared the podium, finishing in third place with a score of 34.58.
It was a case of deja vu for American superstar Huston, who had to settle for the silver medal in a repeat of the X Games, finishing second scoring 35.75 despite a superb run at the championships.
In the women’s competition, Nishimura led a Japanese 1-2 podium finish adding the crown to the world title she won in 2018 with a total score of 14.73 points. She shared the podium with two 13-year-old skateboarders. Momiji Nishiya scored 14.17 to win the silver medal behind her fellow countrywoman. The equally impressive 13-year-old Rayssa Leal of Brazil rounded off the podium with a score of 13.47.
